Story Mode in Builder is where we search for the perfect sound bites, and use those to write our Stories in an optimized environment.
Filter Selects in Story Mode
In Story Mode you can filter selects using the Filter box at the top of the Selects column. Builder supports both "OR" and "AND" searching. You can use either type of search and limit it to Favorites only. Selects filter on the words in the transcript and Keywords added to a text range.
Limit Filter to one type of metadata
You can change the search type for the Filter in Transcript and Selects view. The options are to filter either All fields; or just People, Keywords or Transcript.
When a search field is active there’s a little arrow to the right of the magnifying glass, which is the Mac’s subtle way of telling you there’s a menu there.
You can change the search type before doing a search or change to a different filter type re-filters with the same terms.
Advanced Filtering
Builder now has an advanced filtering mode that is useful to hone in on a specific response or story beat.
When the People+Keywords+Transcripts option is selected you can create complex queries. For example, if I wanted to find instances where Jada said the words "Climate Change" then the Filter would be Jada++Climate Change (with And mode search). You don't have to enter a filter term for all three (as the example shows), but you do have to use the +!
Write Stories
Stories are built by adding text ranges from the Selects LIST (left) to the Storyline on the right. You can press the 'e' key to append the text range, or drag the text range to the location in the Storyline where it fits the story. You can select multiple text ranges and add them to the story together.
Text ranges can be trimmed in the Storyline by inserting the cursor at the edit point and pressing the Return key to make the edit.
Return unused text ranges to the Selects list with the Delete key, or by dragging them back to the Select list.
Clips can be reordered in the Storyline by dragging the Clip(s).
You can add a Spacer in the story to add three seconds of black silence to better indicate pacing.
Find Text Range Context from Transcripts, Selects or Story
If a text range is selected in Selects or Story view, the same text range will be selected in the Transcript view.
Simply return to Transcript view and the same text range will be highlighted in context.
When searching in Clip Logging Transcripts or within the Select List, if you select a text range within a search result, then clear the result, the text range(s) will remain highlighted in context in the Selects list.
Add Spacer or Temporary Narration/Voice Over
To add temporary narration or voice over in the Storyline, select the clip before the narration should start.
Click the "Add temp V.O." button and type in the text of the narration.
Builder will use the System Voice and Language to create an audio file that will be used in FCP X.
Temp narration can be exported to a text document. It will appear was an audio only clip in the NLE.
Temp narration can be updated to new voice or language by changing the System Preferences and then Click the "Remake Voice Overs" button.
Export Story, Script, Preview Video and Narration
Builder can export:
The Story to FCP X as a Project (directly or via zipped XML) OR to Premiere Pro as a Sequence (directly or via zipped XML)
The script of the Story as a text document
The script of the temp narration pieces for approval and recording
An MP4 Preview of the Story.
If you export to a watch folder for Frame.io or into DropBox the preview MP4 can be shared for review.
